Fall 2021 Lay Servant Courses

The Greater Southwest District is pleased to offer two advanced Lay Servant courses this Fall. 

Courses are free – order your own book and bring a lunch.
You must attend both sessions to earn credit for the course.
Registration deadline is one week prior to the first session.
Courses with fewer than 5 people will be cancelled.
COVID-19 precautions will be followed. Details will be sent prior to the first session.

Life Together in the United Methodist Connection (UM Polity)
Saturdays, Oct 30 & Nov 13
9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Centreville UMC
Led by Rev. Joyce Vanderlip
Required book: The Method of Our Mission by Laceye C. Warner
This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. A copy of The 2016 Book of Discipline is recommended for this course. This course fulfills the “United Methodist Polity” requirement for Certified Lay Speaker status.

 

Leading Worship
Saturdays, Nov 20 & Dec 4
9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Centreville UMC
Led by Rev. Lanette “Lane” Van
Required book: Worshiping with United Methodists (REVISED) by Hoyt Hickman
This course focuses on the ministry of the lay servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group or congregation in worship. This course fulfills the “Leading Worship” requirement for Certified Lay Speaker status.
