A Summer of Learning, Community, and Faith at Semilla

This summer at Semilla, things were busy! We had two interns join us to discover what church is all about. These two young ladies learned so much about Semilla and The United Methodist Church—not only from Sunday morning services, but throughout the week as well.

We held our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and our sewing classes. In both programs, we were able to provide a space for children to come and learn alongside their parents. The children learned about Jesus while their parents learned and practiced English, and mothers learned new skills while their children also learned new things. At the end of our program, the children learned the Lord’s Prayer, and some were even able to recite it on their own!

We also had volunteers representing several churches who provided dinners for the English classes and teaching our sewing class: Bangor: Simpson, Lawton: St. Paul’s, Paw Paw, Almena, Lawrence, and Hartford UMCs and St. Mark’s Episcopal church of Paw Paw. Thank you for being the body of Christ in our midst!

To finish our summer session, we ended our time together with a “Know Your Rights” presentation from the Immigration Law & Justice Network.

We are excited to see what God will do in this upcoming season! From September through November, your church has a wonderful opportunity to engage in local mission work right here in our community. We are looking for groups or individuals who would be willing to provide a dinner for our classes on Tuesdays or teach one day of the class.
